New World is a fictional magazine focused on science and technology. I designed two feature articles about climate change in the Amazon rainforest, an interview with a deep sea diver, respectively, and two department articles on book reviews and a photo essay of drought in California. I also designed the frontmatter, including the table of contents, the letter from the editor, and the letters to the editor. In addition I also designed two more covers from the previous month and next month, to show how they might work in an on-going series.
The goal of this project was to create a system that could work across multiple articles and issues of a magazine. There are very fine typographic details and many assets to keep track of. My goal was to do interesting things with my 12 column grid, and do interesting things with the type and image.
The New World logo, the headers, and the pull-quotes are in the typeface Druk, a condensed sans serif that went well with my secondary typeface Allumi, which I used for the body text. The color palette is derived from the opening spread of each of the articles, and then adjusted to be more similar in tone.
